This week

Late summer is warm on the water. Ferries are the air conditioning. Sultanahmet at 8am; Kadıköy for the evening. Cats will supervise.

How it actually works

  • The ferry is not optional

Get an Istanbulkart on day one. Ferries, trams, metro. Crossing the Bosphorus for the price of a coffee is the city’s best trick. Sit outside even in wind.

  • Tea is punctuation

Çay comes after, during, and instead of things. You can say no. You will say yes. Two sugars unless you stop them. It is not a tourist upsell; it is the rhythm.

  • You do not owe anyone a carpet

Friendly conversation in Sultanahmet often ends in a shop. Enjoy the talk, decline the stairs. A ‘maybe later’ delivered while walking still works.

Hidden gems

All gems

Hidden · Fatih

Süleymaniye courtyard

Sinan’s great mosque, fewer tour groups than Sultanahmet, a terrace with the Golden Horn below.

Local note. Late afternoon. The attached kitchen still feeds people.

Hours: Outside prayer times

Food · Kadıköy

A pideci in Kadıköy

Pide from the oven, not a meze performance. Regional cooking, plastic stools, correct.

Local note. Lunch. Point at what the next table has.

Hours: 11:00–20:00

Landmark · Karaköy

Istanbul Modern, new building

The Bosphorus through gallery glass. Contemporary Turkish work, a serious bookshop.

Local note. Weekday morning. Combine with the ferry pier.

Walk · Fatih

Balat back streets

Colored houses, steep streets, a neighborhood still arguing with its own fame. Go now, gently.

Local note. Coffee, not a photoshoot in someone’s doorway.
