This week

Late summer is hot. Do the medina at 8am and 6pm. Midday belongs to the riad courtyard and a long mint tea. Nights are the square.

How it actually works

  • You do not need a guide for the souk

Unsolicited guides appear at every gate. A firm ‘non, merci’ and keep walking. If you want one, hire through your riad for a set price, in the morning.

  • Cash, and the pause

Dirhams. ATMs in Guéliz. In the souk, start at half, meet in the middle, smile when you walk away. Tea is hospitality; it is not a contract.

  • Cover more than you would at home

Shoulders and knees in the medina is respect, not a rule written down. Heat is not an excuse that lands well. A scarf solves most of it.

Skip the tanneries

The famous ones in Fez are the real story. Marrakech tanneries are a mint-leaf upsell. Spend the hour in a garden instead.

Local note. Anyone leading you ‘just to see’ is on commission.

A hammam with a neighborhood door

Public hammam, not a spa menu. You will be scrubbed. Bring a change of clothes and a sense of humor.

Local note. Women’s and men’s hours differ. Ask the riad.

Hours: Varies by hammam
