This week

Late winter into spring: four seasons in a day is not a joke. Carry a layer. Coffee is the civic religion; laneways are the parish.

How it actually works

  • Coffee is not a personality, but it is close

A flat white is the default. ‘Long black’ if you want it straight. Do not order a bucket of syrup. The good places are small and fast; watch the room and copy it.

  • Pack the fourth season

Morning sun, afternoon slap of rain, a cold change. A light waterproof lives in your bag. Trams on the free City Circle are for orientation, not for getting anywhere on time.

  • Look up, then look down the next alley

The grid is British; the laneways are the real map. If a street is wide and sunny, turn into the next dark gap. That is usually the room you wanted.

York Butter Factory basement bars

A lane that drops you into rooms you would miss. Melbourne nightlife as a series of doors.
