This week

Late August is thunderstorm country and slow afternoons. Indoor music rooms, porch sitting, a late dinner. Hydrate like it is a job.

How it actually works

  • The weather is a character

Summer is not a suggestion. Water, shade, indoor hours. Night is when the city works. A storm will arrive, dump, and leave; wait it out on a porch.

  • Bourbon is not New Orleans

It is a street that sells a version. You can look. Then go to Frenchmen, to a neighborhood restaurant, to the river. The city is larger than a neon block.

  • Music is work

Cover charges and tip jars are the economy. If you stand in a room and listen, you pay. Photographing the band without putting a dollar in is a tell.

Hidden gems

Walk · Bayou St. John

St. Louis Cemetery No. 3

Quieter than No. 1, still the city’s architecture of goodbye. Tombs like little houses.

Local note. Go in daylight. Guided is easier at No. 1; here you can walk with care.

Hours: Daylight, check gates

Pause · Bywater

A Bywater coffee porch

Shotgun houses, bikes, a slower morning than the Quarter will ever have.

Food · Mid-City

Parkway for the roast beef

A po-boy argument-ender. Debris gravy. Not downtown.

Local note. Go early for lunch. Cash sometimes still matters; bring a card anyway.

Hours: Wed–Mon, lunch into afternoon
