November–April, when the air has an edge

This week

Late summer is typhoon season and a wet blanket. MRT air-con is the civic gift. Night markets after 18:00; temples in the morning; a mountain if the sky is clean. Convenience stores will save you more than once.

How it actually works

  • The EasyCard is the city in your pocket

MRT, buses, convenience stores, some taxis. Tap. Stand on the right. Eat on the train and you will feel the temperature of the car change. 7-Eleven will print tickets, take parcels, and sell you an umbrella when the sky opens.

  • One market, three things, walk home

You cannot finish a night market. That is the design. Pick three stalls. Share. Leave while you still like the city. Raohe, Ningxia, and a neighbourhood alley market are different animals; do not stack them in one night.

  • When the signal goes up, the plan is convenience-store

Typhoons cancel mountains and sometimes MRT branches. Stay inside, eat instant, watch the rain like it is the attraction. Do not hunt for the last open night market as a personality test.

Treasure Hill

A former squatter village on a slope, now studios and quiet lanes above the river.

Landmark · Zhongzheng

Huashan 1914, one exhibition only

A wine warehouse turned halls. Better than another circuit of the memorial axis.

Food · Gongguan or Yongkang

A mango ice that is not a brand

Fruit, ice, condensed milk. Summer’s entire personality.

Hours: Afternoon into evening

Pause · Dadaocheng

A tea house in town instead of Jiufen

Jiufen is a day and a crowd. Taipei still has rooms with teapots and time.

Local note. If you go to Jiufen anyway, weekday, first train, out before the coaches.

Hours: Tea shops often 11:00–20:00
